private drum lessons
I primarily teach in Portland, OR at Revival Drum Shop.
I have been playing drums for 29 years and teaching privately for 15. I have also taught group workshops at Ladyfest, Homo A GoGo, Revival Drum Shop, at an anarchist venue in an ancient old columned building in Bologna, Italy, and at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls. I teach in the Music & Sonic Arts department at Portland Community College.
I wrote a book on how to play the drums that is available here. I currently play in the projects STLS, Secret Drum Band, Hits of Sunshine, DUBAIS, and The Newman/Schonberg/Reyna Group, and was the drummer for Kickball and Explode into Colors. I have also played with TJO, Thao with the get down stay down, Jonathan Sielaff, Harry & The Potters, Gabriel Salomon & Peter Broderick, Mirah, Cloud Eye Control, Tune-yards, and the Need.
Lessons are 30 or 60 minutes, and are tailored to the students’ particular interests. I specialize in teaching beginning to intermediate levels. I have taught students as young as 4 years old, and am excited to take on new students of all ages. I love teaching older students who have always wanted to learn! It is never too late. 30 minute lessons are suggested for kids 7 and younger.
You can start to learn even if you don’t have your own kit yet. All you need is a practice pad, or some chairs, unwanted books, or pans to bang on. There is so much you can work on to develop your coordination before getting a kit.
Please contact me by email to setup your lessons at firstname.lastname@example.org. Gift certificates are available! I can mail a hand-drawn certificate to you or the student.
Lessons are $50 an hour or $30 for a half-hour. A special summer package of 8 lessons is available for $345 -- learn basic skills by the fall! I accept cash, Venmo, or check. I do not accept Paypal, as they charge fees that I would not like to pay them!
